- LECTURE BY JUAN MANUEL SOBRADO “Roman roads and Aquis Querquennis” ( March 2012)
The researcher, member of the Larouco Group that has excavated in Aquis Querquennis military Camp, among other places, gave a lecture in our school about this place and the Roman Roads in the Iberian Peninsula. This researcher is a specialist in this subject about which he is preparing his doctoral thesis. He won the Prize “Conde de Pallares” in 2008 with a study about the Roman road that linked Lucus Augusti and Aquis Querquennis.
VISIT TO THE PROVINCIAL MUSEUM OF LUGO (Roman remains) and DOMUS DO MITREO (March 2012)
The Provincial Museum of Lugo contains many pieces from Roman times: altar stones, mosaics, milestones, funerary stelas and so on. From these remains we were explained how the Roman city was founded, how it was organized and other curiosities such as the reason of the presence in the city of some statues like the eagle.
We also made another visit to the “Domus do Mitreo”, where the archaeologist in charge of the excavations (Mr. Celso Rodríguez Cao) explained us about this Roman house, one of the best preserved in the Iberian Peninsula that showed us the Lugo town planning during the course of centuries; it also has the added value of the existence of a mithraeum or temple of veneration to the god Mithra, one of the only five preserved in the Iberian Peninsula.
